On the 21st of september 2024 i had an amazing chance to finally try out a (full sized) pottery wheel at cast in Helston! the session was around two hours long and we were shown how to make a coil pot by hand which i loved. it felt very organic and calming to have control over the clay so gently. we were shown how to score the clay and apply slip to attach elements to our pots, i added a ring around the base and two little handles! here is a picture of my hand built pot once it had been fired ; we used terracotta clay with only a clear glaze and i love the natural look it gave my pots:
Next, we got to try out the wheel which i was most excited for! We were shown how to centre the clay and then how to pull it correctly to add height. After a few failed attempts, these were my surviving pots:
i hope to return to cast to make use of their open studios in the future!
