working title : the first thing i ever made
thinking about where my interest in working with my hands began, all the way back to the playground. i was fascinated by the similarity between a sewing needle and the holes in a daisy chain. wanting to make a more substantial, weighted version of the usually fragile playground artwork, i cut mine out of plywood. working with my hands to create a scaled up and cartooned version of the traditional daisy chain, i hoped to bring light to the importance of these small instinctual crafts we don’t usually give credit to. i have always been making even before i knew why, and this piece is an ode to that obsession.
hanging my daisies in a space that allows natural light to reflect as they rotate, solidifies them to me as precious objects. the natural light bringing the outside in, much like i have done with the daisies. i enjoy the tactility of the sculpture as well, mirroring childhood wooden toys, making play into an adult activity.
